Casual Clothes for a Cause (C-3) Day is a long standing tradition in the Riverview Community School District.  At the return of every school year, every staff member gets to vote for one organization to support for C-3 Day.  There are a number of deserving organizations/charities submitted every year, yet not all organizations are awarded a C-3 Day.  The third Friday of every month is designated as C-3 Day and staff members make a donation (minimum of $5) to dress down for the day.  Friday, January 15, 2010 was designated as C-3 day for the International WAGR Syndrome Association.  I am pleased and humbled with the support the IWSA has received from the great staff in Riverview.  This year $1,030 was raised for the IWSA, which brings the amount raised over the past four years close to $3,500.

Perhaps your work place would consider hosting a C-3 Day for the IWSA?  Perhaps your child’s school would like to get involved in a community service project for the IWSA?  There are many school clubs that are active in raising funds to support non-profit organizations.  Check with your local school for clubs like EGAD (Everybody Gives A Darn), Key Club, Interact Club or Student Council to see if they would consider raising funds for the IWSA.  Fundraising is a wonderful opportunity for school-age children to learn the importance of philanthropy while helping children who are in need at the same time.

Ideas for Elementary, Middle and High School Students:

The events listed below are examples appropriate for any age group of students.
Try one of these ideas or create a Kids For the IWSA idea of your own!

Be an “All Star” for IWSA Kids
A committee of students create stars out of construction paper. Students purchase the stars, write their name or well wishes on them, and hang them up in a popular area of the school.

Sell Candy-Grams
For 50 cents kids write messages to friends and teachers that are attached to a piece of candy and delivered during the day. Candy-grams work especially well around holidays.

Host a “Penny War”
Arrange for a contest between grades or homerooms to collect the most amount of pennies. Silver coins and dollar bills can be put in the opposing team's containers to count against the pennies.

Host a “Money Week”
This fundraising idea consists of students donating pennies on Monday, nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday, and one dollar bills on Friday. The winning group is the one with the largest total at the end of the week.

Dress Down Day
If your school has a dress code, find out if students can make a donation to wear casual clothes for the day. Teachers can participate, too!

Hat Day
Students make a donation to wear a hat for the day.

Fill the “Gorilla Giving” Container
Create a “Gorilla Giving” Jar and then have a competition between grade levels to see who can fill the container with the most money.

Movie Night
Rent a current movie and invite students and their families for a fun-filled night.  Sell tickets and popcorn. Try to have a door prize donated and call the winning ticket number during intermission.

Give a Holiday Donation
Instead of a gift exchange or buying gifts for your advisors and peers, make donations to the IWSA in their honor.

Host a Car Wash
Your organization can work with a local place of business to plan a car wash.
